Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Serving the Headquarter of Central Railways in Mumbai



Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is UNESCO World Heritage Site that is it is listed by UNESCO as of special cultural and physical significance. Chtatrapti Shivaji Terminus which is called as CST is also known as Victoria Terminus which is a historic railway station in India serving the Headquarters of Central Railways in Mumbai.
CST is one of the popular railways Station in Mumbai and major tourist’s attraction because of its Gothic Style Architecture. The station was built in 1887 in Bori Bunder region of Bombay to admire the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. CST is the busiest railway station in India and this station serves both the terminals for long distance trains as well as for local trains of Mumbai Suburban Railway.

The structure of CST is the fusion of styles from Victorian Italianate Gothic Architecture and Indian Traditional Architecture which is designed by Fredrick Williams Steven. The pointed arches, turrets, skyline and the eccentric ground plans are very close to the structure of Indian Palaces. This station is built with high level engineering for both Railway construction as well as for the structure of station. CST has 18 platforms and from which 7 are for locals and 121 for long distance trains.
Chatrapti Shivaji Terminus was attacked by two terrorists on 26 November 2008. They entered the passenger hall and started firing and threw grenades at people. They were armed with AK-47 rifles and later one of them was caught that is, Ajmal Kasab, they killed 58 people and injured 104 peoples. This attack was one of the largest attacks India ever faced.
